I wonder if their backups were corrupted too, or if they just overwrite the old ones with newer ones as a cost-saving measure. Or whether no one ever tried restoring from them and for whatever reason they never could have been restored from. Since people rarely prioritize it until it's too late, maybe 'restore from backup' drills should be a common thing.
