I'm doing the same thing. Two years ago I started to do most of my work in a Virtual Machine in Debian Linux. Looks like my gut was right - I'll wait until 10.10 or my MBP doesn't work anymore and then I'll have to do a painful switch. Actually I already migrated most of my things (Evernote, Things, Mail.app) already into Emacs and must say that this old Lisp machine is the best OS of the three^^ So I take the world becoming closed and proprietary as a chance to go back to sanity.
