Why english?
- krallja 10y agoUsers can look up these three-word locations, which have been translated into Mongolian, for free on the What3Words website or app. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What3words#Design_principles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What3words#Design_principles
- tantalor 10y agoThe words were literally translated? That makes no sense... the meaning of the words is not important.
- gonvaled 10y agoIf meaning of words is not important, I say let's default to Euskera.
- DanBC 10y agoWhat's easier for you to remember - ample.estate.racing or хангалттай.хөрөнгийн.уралдааны
- gonvaled 10y agoThe fact that you are even asking that is prove of the level of arrogance that the anglospeaking part of the world has reached.
- maxerickson 10y agoI think you've misunderstood the point being made by GP. (that is, they are arguing that most people will have an easier time remembering words from their native language)
- DanBC 10y agoSorry, you misunderstand me. If you read eg cyrillic you're going to find it very much easier to read and remember cyrillic words. Thus, presenting cyrillic to those people benefits them. That's why translating from English to local languages is a good thing.
- gonvaled 10y agoSorry, I indeed misunderstood you!
- ovis 10y agoIt does if you're a visitor trying to find an address in the local language.
- unwind 10y agoNo, they don't seem to have been literally translated. My Swedish address is not the translation of my English address. Which is kind of interesting in its own right, since you can then refer to the same physical location in different ways depending on which language you use. This calls for some kind of geographic cross-lingual poetry.
- gonvaled 10y agoAnd surely the mongolian translation has been carefuly vetted like the original english one ... no offensive phrases in mongolian?
- anc84 10y agoCarefully vetted? I don't have the time right now but there are countless weird, insulting, offensive phrases possible with this proprietary abomination.
- gonvaled 10y agoWhich have been vetted in their propietary algorithm, according to the wikipedia page. Dont know how well it works, though.
- anc84 10y agoUnless they went back and manually deleted words after their second round of hype last year, they are still in. Their wikipedia page surely has been largely written by them themselves.
