In Emacs, this can be done using "C-\ TeX", which enables an input mode that turns ^1 (resp. _1) into a superscript (resp. subscript) 1, and similarly for other digits. (Hacker News' UI is simple enough to be usable in Emacs.) No idea about other environments.
