This reminds me of one of Paul Graham's essays, "Made in USA," http://paulgraham.com/usa.html http://paulgraham.com/usa.html, where a friend visiting from Italy remarks that American cities are so ugly. He goes on to explore what America is good at and what it is not so good at.
