On a related note, a few days ago [1] Marc Andreessen recommended another show based on startup culture: Halt and Catch Fire [2]
I haven't seen it, but I will probably give it a shot.

- minimaxir 10y agoHalt and Catch Fire is definitely not about startup culture: it's a drama about the birth of the tech industry.
- walrus01 10y agoexcept that it's not set in silicon valley at all, it's set in the early 1980s Texas PC/semiconductor industry
- minimaxir 10y agoAh right. Fixed.
- Apocryphon 10y agoSilicon Valley isn't the birthplace of all high-tech.
- rhino369 10y agoI think S3 is about them moving to SV.
- jsprogrammer 10y agoHalt and Catch fire is hardly about the birth of the tech industry. It's a character drama centered around a family electronics company being hijacked to produce IBM clones.
- ascagnel_ 10y agoThe first season, yes; the second is a radical departure from the first.
- bobsil1 10y agoThe eps I skimmed felt dumbed down for Hollywood. Unrealistically hot, oversexed people with tech as just a backdrop.
- maknz 10y agoHalt and Catch Fire is great, definitely recommend.
- greggman 10y agoI stopped after the first episode. It match ZERO percent of any of my silicon valley experience. Have never seen a backyard party with famous band. Have never seen a famous band with "nerds" not watching. Have never been to an SV party where hot women stand around looking to pick up rich SV men. Maybe it gets better but I didn't give it the chance.
- josephpmay 10y agoThe first few episodes are slow. It gets MUCH better.
- Apocryphon 10y agoIt's set in Dallas. They're finally going to Silicon Valley in the yet to be released third season.
- bobsil1 10y ago> hot women stand around looking to pick up rich Rosewood Hotel cougar night by Sand Hill.
- greggman 10y agoThis was a private industry party in someone's backyard, not a hotel lobby/lounge
- forgottenpass 10y agoGotta work on your networking then. I don't even live in California but the one time I went to an event hosted by big Valley tech company hit two for three.
- greggman 10y agowas it in someone's backyard? Sure I've been it parties with famous bands but they weren't in someone's backyard they were at club/music venues or convention centers
- drumdance 10y agoI watched a few episodes but could not get into it. Too breathless. The kind of people Silicon Valley rightfully mocks.
- dclowd9901 10y agoI disliked the over dramatic stuff and the early first season tried to treat the lead like a Steve jobs (yet again). I really like the 80s aesthetic and the Texas setting. Makes me almost wish I was around during those days.
- amrangaye 10y agoI think it was more the lead trying to be a Steve jobs figuere (and mostly failing at creating actually good products)... The first season culminates in him seeing a Mac for the first time, and realizing everything he's done so far is not even in the same ball park. But it was a good show - and got much better in the second season if you stuck with it.
- dclowd9901 10y agoYeah I did stick with it and totally agree, but I'd say Mr Robot far surpasses HACF for tech based drama.
