I gather uBeam's stick was to give a demo of an impractical ultrasonic power transfer system (off-the-shelf transducers transmitting a small amount of power over an insignificant distance) and claim that they just needed to scale it up by improving on the existing technology. Which presumably sounded reasonable to VCs who didn't bother doing some back-of-the-envelope maths on the physics...
