Sophisticated hack attack? Don't believe the hype
- PhantomGremlin 10y agoThe article is a screed against the use of the word "sophisticated" in describing mundane attacks against websites. It fails to consider at least two things: 1) to non-technical top management, everything about how the Information Superhighway works is "sophisticated". They don't understand it, so: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." 2) It's strongly in the interest of overpaid and underworked CIOs that probably got their job via nepotism or the "old boys network" to portray virtually any attack as "sophisticated". Does a CIO want to go into a meeting with the CEO or with the Board of Directors and say: "yeah, this is such a simple attack that it was probably done by a 15 year old". Nope. Admitting that wouldn't be a good career move.
