The mathematician Stieltjes never completed a PhD, but was first rate. He was given an honorary doctorate so that he could apply for a chair at Groningen university.
- anamax 17y agoBob Floyd never even tried to get a PhD. (He did collect letters addressed to "Dr. Floyd".) Stanford made him a full professor even though he didn't spend "enough" time on the tenure track.
