I had a real life friend die when I was away at college. Apparently everyone else knew even though they were away at college as well. Came back one week too late and found out I had missed the funeral by a few days. I think the problem isn't whether or not your friendship is online, but whether or not it's advertised sufficiently to the next of kin and other relevant social networks.
