- douglasfshearer 10y agoThe walking tree harvester, called PlusJack, was a development project by Timberjack (now part of John Deere) revealed in 1999. The machine never entered production due to high manufacturing and maintenance costs, as well as the speed at which it could cover ground. The prototype is now housed in The Museum of Lusto [1] in Finland (near bottom of page for pictures). - Animats 10y agoDeere / Timberjack was beaten out by Ponsse.[1] Four wheels, two caterpillar tracks, and an articulated chassis. Probably lower ground pressure than the six-legged machine, because the heavy loads are on wide tracks. [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daCCTuaiY0Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daCCTuaiY0Q
- brianbreslin 10y agoThe komatsu machine that plucks the tree up and shreds the branches looks like something a transformers villain would be made of.
- tree_beard 10y agoMany of these trees were my friends! Creatures I had known from nut or acorn! They had voices of their own! Saruman! A wizard should know better! I think that I now understand what Saruman is up to. He is plotting to become a Power. He has a mind of metal and wheels! And he does not care for growing things, except as far as they serve him for the moment... And now it is clear that he is a traitor. He has taken up with foul folk, with the Orcs.
