Have you ever been to the GBR? It's immense and peeking into just a small section you realize that it's teeming with a complex web of life that's beyond any comprehension. I think most people can't connect with the importance because the environment on land has been "tamed" by human activity for hundreds of years. Diving the GBR is like going back in time a thousand years in that way. It's like we're destroying a galaxy with thousands of worlds. Frankly, the GBR more beautiful and complex than anything human culture has or will ever come up with.
