If China did this what would you think the reasons would be? Of course it would be to spy on their citizens, to exert social control.
What makes us think the US is so different after the stuff that's gone down in recent years?
I genuinely consider it a possibility that this is linked to the panic over terrorism and that governments now have access to the data being hoovered up on practically everyone by Microsoft.
Of course I have no evidence. So the best that can be said objectively is that we cannot know either way, but still my gut is sending me warning messages.
- kuschku 10y ago> "Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary" (also read https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/ https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/ )
- DanBC 10y agoEveryone does this. Try sending an image of child sexual abuse through your gmail account and see what happens. Google even tells you they do it for rights enforcement: https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/ https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/ > For legal reasons > We will share personal information with companies, organizations or individuals outside of Google if we have a good-faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to: > * meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request. > * enforce applicable Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations. > * detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues. > * protect against harm to the rights, property or safety of Google, our users or the public as required or permitted by law.
- vetinari 10y agoHow is that even in the same league? Google can disclose, what you send to their servers. Microsoft can disclose, what you keep on your own machine.
- ryanl0l 10y ago>Microsoft can disclose, what you keep on your own machine. Want to expand on that a little? Presumably the above quote is regarding skydrive etc.
- vetinari 10y agoAfter some light googling, it appears, that it was a part of original privacy statement, when Windows 10 was released. For example: https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-personal-data-abused/ https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-persona... (when googling the phrase cited by kuschku, the first link is to reddit and there it links to edri).
- Piskvorrr 10y ago"If you want privacy, you must be a child molester or a terrist." Obvious troll is obvious. On a more serious note, "everyone does that" makes it okay? Really?
- TeMPOraL 10y agoObvious reading comprehention failure is obvious. DanBC didn't write anything which could imply he believes that "If you want privacy, you must be a child molester or a terrist".
- Piskvorrr 10y ago"Try sending an image of child sexual abuse through your gmail account and see what happens." - the implication is clear: "why else would you fear the Big Brother?"
- ryanlol 10y agoI think you need to reread DanBCs comment. His comment is stating what google does and gives a pretty strong example, not justifying what they do.
- TeMPOraL 10y agoNo, the implication is - do that for a practical demonstration that Google does the same thing 'kuschku pointed out Microsoft does.
- Joeboy 10y agoI presume the purpose of that sentence is to back up the previous one ("Everybody does this").
- DanBC 10y agoThat's not what I meant. How could I make my comment more clear? What I meant is that almost all companies will invade privacy to prevent and detect certain crimes. MS does it, but so do Google, Apple, etc etc.
- kuschku 10y ago> We will share personal information with __companies__, organizations or __individuals__ outside of Google if we have __a good-faith belief__ that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to: […] __protect against harm to the rights, property or safety of Google__ That alone can be turned into "we can share whatever we want with anyone whenever we feel like it" very easily, you realize that? The proper solution would be > We will share personal information with governments if we are required by law to do so. Nothing more, nothing less.
