They've been pretty open about that for at least 3 years. This profile in GQ quotes Reed Hastings as saying:
"The goal," he says, "is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us."

- rpgmaker 10y agoI love HBO but they are in a different weight class. At the end of the day most customers will see Netflix's catalog vs HBO's and will go with Netflix. I don't think that this is the best way for them to frame this battle.
