A very high fraction of the economy is arts and media-based; in some locales (such as L.A.) it may well be over 50%. You are not going to get good architects, designers, story-tellers, graphic artists, lawyers, and even politicians, if no one is willing to obtain the appropriate education. And this is only for the "practical" careers; society also needs its academics and historians.
