Ask HN: Tips setting up a mass video processing solution
Hello everybody!
For about 2 years, I have been developing torrent streaming technology. I am quite certain I could make it work on a large scale and want to start a website which offers the service for a fee.
However, I'm running into a problem. For $5/mo I'd like to offer up to 100 GB of storage, yet Amazon S3 and all the other things that are "trendy" right now cost so much more for transit and storage, and I cannot find any cheaper providers.
Yet another issue is video transcoding. I'd like to offer transcoding of downloaded files to various formats (DASH, pseudo-streaming, HLS, all in H264 and VP9). Again, it's incredibly expensive to do such a thing, with most services charging 0.2$ per minute of video, and half that for audio. Meaning I'd have to pay 60$ for 300 minutes of video that can fit in 100 GB with good compression.
I'd like you to suggest me services that I can utilize to do this. Please note, I'm just a high school student with basically no money, so I can't really afford to pay in advance.
I'll be using PayPal and Stripe for payments, and a custom solution for DMCA and similar legal acts (basically blacklisting torrent files that get reported).
I'm expecting to use up to 100 TB of bandwidth monthly (download) and 2x that in upload. My current provider provides unlimited 10Gbps network but it seems too good to be true.
Thanks.
