A friend of mine at Intel told me that Intel doesn't care that much about not owning this market because the size of the profit pool around server chips is orders of magnitude greater and they have monopolistic control of that market.
- ryao 10y agoThat is the same thing that the mainframe vendors said about minicomputers and the same thing that the minicomputer vendors said about microprocessing. Intel's failure to recognize itself as the next link in the cycle was a colossal mistake. They should have gone to Steve Jobs and offered to rectify their mistake the moment they realized how popular the iPhone was. Instead, they tried the Itanium strategy of promising things they could not deliver. What made them think that would work after the first failure?
