With mutli-core CPU now almost ubiquitous Threading is completely essential (outside of a GUI). I can't imagine developing a scalable application without threads. There is a language called Fantom which purports to be "thread safe" I believe by serializing objects between threads, so the data in the objects could easily become stale if not designed correctly.
