How do you start your independent analysis if by not looking at what's popular? Doing your own analysis and reading amazon reviews are not exclusive. I find wirecutter usually accurate in facts, but I rarely agree with them on their recommendation of what is good for me. That being said, they are very explicit in why they recommend something, I just wish there were other reviewers who shared my set of interests and values in things.
