There's no need to involve remote servers for your self-driving car to open your garage door. It can do it the same way you currently do, with an RF signal. I'm sure we can concoct some contrived examples where one needs to open a garage door without being present, but I really think this is more about the big tech companies trying to get vendor lock-in.
