It could be a cultural artifact. I've heard it said in defense of shell companies, that if you live in a country where you're likely to be extorted for your wealth it makes sense to hide it. Immigrants to North America of all stripes, not just Chinese, are likelier to come from cultures where it's kneejerk-normal to hide wealth.
