  Kind of, but a bit more elegant and much more general in nature. The idea is to put this device between the electricity outlet and whatever device. I could then go to a website and toggle the electricity switch.

These things exist, and while that is of itself no reason for you not to do it out of interest, I just wondered if you were aware. We've used versions of these for some time.
