Sometimes the world isn't as black and white as that.
I was misdiagnosed as having IBS a couple of years ago, and became addicted to oxycontin, because the pain was no severe I couldn't go to work without it.
At one point I had to have a colonoscopy, and I had to stop taking oxycontin 48 hours before the procedure, the withdrawl was hell.
I remember being scatter brained, unable to focus on anything for more than a few seconds, I was sweating and shivering, and it felt like my bones were on fire. The withdrawl caused a deep pain, especially in my joints, ankles and knees were the worst. It was a strange pain I had never felt before, like fire and electric. Even my teeth hurt.
It took 24 hours or so to get past the worst of it, and I have been VERY lucky to get another diagnosis and some medication that helps. I will never take oxycontin again, but sometimes, you just cant help it.
- noir_lord 11y agoI had massive dental problems a few years ago, they started me on a high dose of codeine but even that wasn't cutting it, I didn't want anything stronger since I knew how bad opiods could be from my ex-partner who was disabled but the pain was so bad I couldn't sleep so I went onto OxyNorm for a few months. Coming off that was absolutely horrible, about as ill as I've felt since I had the flu and nearly ended up hospitalized. I have a spinal condition and opiod's have been suggested by multiple docs but I simply won't take them until the equation balances, withdrawl and potential depency vs not be able to function.
- g00gler 11y agoHow was going to work on the oxy? I had surgery a few months ago and stopped taking them after 2 days because I couldn't focus (or really think clearly) after taking a dose.
- malux85 11y agoI was doing web development at the time, and I too found it hard to focus, especially on deeper problems - e.g. visualising deep stack traces or class hierarchies. I was able function, but it definitely required more conscious effort
- g00gler 11y agoFunnily enough I was trying to pick up React with my time off but I just couldn't make it do the thing. Next day, off narcotics, it was a breeze lol.

The effects of Oxy are...off-putting if you don't know what to expect, and I'd agree that it might mess with your "focus". But, personally, I've found altered mental states to increase focus, once you can "harness" it. Note: I'm not advocating experimenting with OxyContin, as it has serious physically addictive properties.
