I would have made a case with my parents for pursuing either a Computer Engineering or a Computer Science degree, and graduated with one, no matter how many years it would have taken. I would have also pushed them further to purchase even a mid-range machine to learn all this on, despite our financial difficulties back then. If I made these decisions early on, I know I would have taken a different path. At least, it wouldn't be the mess I'm in now.
