Circumventing a weak protection is still a violation of DMCA in US. This would be essentially the following choice for the company: a) you can force people not to circumvent your protections, but you can't assert copyright (so if someone didn't circumvent the protection herself, one can legally redistribute), b) you can assert copyright, but can't force people not to circumvent protection (so that one can circumvent them for personal or other allowed use). I'm not sure if that would be a good idea, but it's not obvious that it's not.
