Ask HN: How often you take Android device full file backup and store it on cloud?
The full file backup means the device folder structure is maintained when stored on cloud (for e.g. Google Drive).
- krishnaycombi 10y agoBy full file backup are you referring to copying all the data under /storage/emulated/0, /sdcard mount points?
- gkrisub 10y agoYes. Storing as it's on cloud. I should be able to browse on cloud storage as I do on device. Basically, maintaining replica of device on cloud.
- krishnaycombi 10y agoThat sounds like a good step in the backup strategy.
- selckin 10y agonever
- gkrisub 10y agoHow do you handle the situation when device gets lost or stop functioning?
- selckin 10y agobuy a new one install software, wait for everything to sync?
- gkrisub 10y agoFor iOS devices, iCloud syncs everything. There is no similar alternative for Android devices. Google Play syncs some: Contacts, Apps and Gmail etc. But to sync app data, other files and folders, Google play doesn't have a copy. And are lost with the device.
- on_and_off 10y agoActually, with Marshmallow, Android apps can now backup themselves just like iOS ones.
- pavan123 10y agoNever. I just took backup of my contacts twice in my lifetime when I was formatting my mobile.
- gkrisub 10y agoHow about backup of SMS, Call log, photos, music and other files, to avoid loosing data in case of device lost? The existing backup apps require scheduling apriori, and I'll loose new data between schedules, when device gets lost.
- pavan123 10y agoIt's a good practice to take regular backups of the entire device. Probably I should do more often.
- subramanyamgv 10y agoIt's painful to schedule backups. I believe users are less predictable on what and when to backup. Chances are that users regret on their backup strategy, after loosing the data for e..g, that they should have scheduled daily rather than weekly
