You are probably referring to the BMW INPA software, which can be executed on any Windows 7 machine. It is hard to set up, which is why the usual solution is to just use a complete image of an OS (with the necessary software already installed) inside of a VM. I personally use it all the time. The only issue I've encountered so far is that I need to use older versions of the RS232 to USB driver. The current ones don't work.
