Every US politician will side on the side of security. If they don't and some awful terrorist plot happens on US soil under their watch, their political career is over. If the argument is between fear and an abstract notion of freedom, fear will always win out. The only way it changes is if the US does away with career politicians, or fear of the government becomes > fear of terrorists.
