Agreed. I don't suspect democratic polities elect dictatorial strongmen unless the nation has largely ceased to function at a political level. Then you get a Chavez, a Khomeini, a Castro, a Hussein, an al-Maliki, and in some weird alternate future that's too close to our own... a Trump. * Edit, some of those guys appeared in countries with no history of democracy, but I think the point stands.
