A scientist?! Since when?
- whyenot 11y agoShe dropped out of Stanford's chemical engineering program. Surely that should count for something!
- freyr 11y agoAll that says is she was admitted to Stanford as an undergrad, and lasted there till she was 19. That alone doesn't make someone a scientist.
- vehementi 11y agoCould anything she's done in the last 13 years qualify her as a scientist? What does it take to be one?
- joshmn 11y agoOnly "official" per MW, but, > a person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences. Would she be able to test out of all her BA requirements from Stanford with what she's learned?
- freyr 11y agoShe might test out of all the BS requirements.
- TrickedOut 11y agoShe might be able to liquidate some of her founder's stock, donate it to a university, and get an honorary PhD :-)
- vehementi 11y agoWhy is the bar a B. Sc.? What about a person who got their BS 50 years ago and can't test today due to increased curriculum difficulty and significantly different material? Did they become non-scientists at some point?
- ekianjo 11y ago> What does it take to be one? Not covering up the scientific questions raised by the FDA, for example, and stop pretending that all is fine in the best of the worlds. A scientist should have scientific integrity above else, and admit they are wrong unless they can prove without doubt what they are claiming to be true.
- vehementi 11y agoThere are a lot of non-scientist scientists out there :/
- catnaroek 11y agoScientists (0) do research, (1) publish their results, (2) train future generations of scientists, (3) offer an informed point of view about the impact of decisions that affect society as a whole.
- joshmn 11y agoShe really likes chemicals!
- return0 11y agoPeople dont call bill gates, steve jobs or zuck Scientists.
- NotSammyHagar 11y agoAre you being sarcastic? Getting into stanford just makes you a good test taker and resume builder- and it means you are smart, but there are lots of smart people in the world. If it was that important, why have people from stanford worked for me many times, i'm just a humble southern state school grad.
- ChuckMcM 11y agoThat is a bit jarring, while pretty much anyone who practices the art of scientific inquiry could nominally call themselves a scientist (after all there is no explicit requirements) that she dropped out before even getting her BS degree makes it seem a bit more challenging to make that connection. This is certainly going to be one of those things studied in business school, that is for certain.
- ekianjo 11y ago> pretty much anyone who practices the art of scientific inquiry could nominally call themselves a scientist Just like saying that anyone doing one year of medicine before dropping out, can claim to have "medical background" ?
- aplummer 11y agoThey do, see all alternate medicine. They just don't call themselves a protected title, which is why that concept exists.
- on_ 11y agoI understand where you're coming from but is there a qualification for "scientist". Is Mark Zuckerberg or Patrick Collison considered computer scientists? Is Richard Branson considered a business man? Is Elizabeth Holmes a business woman? She runs a business which (arguably I guess) is doing science. I don't really think a scientist is a term that demands credentials. Obviously, specializations and distinctions in the field do, but you can certainly be an engineer without a degree and conduct science without one.
- LordHumungous 11y ago>Is Mark Zuckerberg or Patrick Collison considered computer scientists? No.
- on_ 11y agoah, gotcha, I guess my point above was that titles are abitrary as fuck. For example: Patrick Collison dropped out of MIT to be the founder and lead developer of 2 technology companies. So I guess I just have trouble figuring out what to call someone who performs all of the same tasks and functions as a label, has much of the knowledge associated with someone who has such a label, and actively studied the for a degree in that label as an autodidact, at a top-tier university(uncompleted), and as an apprentice. Is he not an engineer? If not, would he be if he finished the few semesters he was shy of graduating at university of phoenix online?
- Mvandenbergh 11y agoSure, he's an engineer. Most people who have computer science degrees work in software engineering jobs and wouldn't think of themselves as "computer scientists" since that is a scientific/mathematical academic discipline. (A very small percentage of software engineers are doing work that is both advancing theoretical computer science and building practical engineering solutions but they probably still think of themselves as engineers)

- lazylizard 11y agoi dont do much more that restart computers and some people call me "engineer"!
- gens 11y agocalm down there, computer scientist
