Somewhat related: Something that I've noticed when helping extremely bright kids in science fairs: If they're motivated, and there's a pair of them who are friends, then I'm essentially useless and getting in the way. That's happened multiple times (getting to the semi-finals/finals of Google, Siemens, etc.) with pairs. When they're alone then it doesn't workout so well.
