I've wondered this for years. I got a nice job at a University Research Lab. I have lots of creative freedom, can write grants, and am well funded. Most of my colleages are Phds yet most of our customers assume I do. I did an honors undergrad with thesis and a masters. I chose a good adviser and after those experiences, I feel I can easily keep up with other phds here but without having to go through the stress of comps, etc.
