Presuming everything is on time - you take 45 minutes to get to SFO, 60 minutes before your flight, 90 minute flight, 30 minutes to get out of LAX, and then 30 minutes to Santa Monica. That means, normally, you are looking at 4 1/2 hours, door to door. Most of it pretty miserable airplane travel, hassle going through airport. I would totally sign up for the sleeper bus.
