I own a 12" Macbook as a secondary machine and frequently bring it with me to travel. I have never felt the need for a second USB-C connector.
What would a second USB-C connector do for you?
- joesmo 11y agoExternal monitor + power at once. I highly doubt that battery's going to drive a 4k for 8+ hours. Actually, I doubt it can drive a 4k @ 60hz at all but mostly because Apple has not released the full specs even though it's been over a year since the Macbook has been released. Even @ 30hz though or 1440p @ 60hz, this can often be taxing on an MBPro let alone the regular Macbook. There might be an adapter that provides both power and Displayport 1.2 or greater, but after months of research I stopped looking. I can barely find regular USB C cables and accessories that people have had good luck with as it is.
- pnut 11y agoPretty sure this would be included in the box http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter?fnode=8b&fs=f%3Dusbtypec%26fh%3D4595%252B44c3 http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av...
- irq 11y agoMy 2 year old 15" rMBP has no problems whatsoever driving an external 4K @ 60Hz monitor (over mini displayport), along with its own built in 2880x1800 display simultaneously. By "no problem" I mean low power consumption and 2% CPU/GPU idle.
- rkho 11y agoAn adapter exists to drive an external display and power. The reality is, a secondary display for most (read: casual, mainly nontechnical consumers who certainly don't read Hacker News nor know of its existence) people is not a priority. Sort of like how inserting a DVD into a computer is no longer a priority for me. It cannot support 4k @ 60hz. I know this because I also own a Dell 27" 4k display to pair with my main machine. I have only connected the Macbook to the display via HDMI (by means of said adapter). It supports 30hz at best. I have not tried a 1440p display. It (of course) runs at 1080p just fine.
- vox_mollis 11y agoApple has never caved to "customer demand" for things like this. They do appear to have caved to the demand for irrelevant nonfunctional details like chassis colors. OP's request is arguably far more important (read: functional) than rose gold tint.
- toyg 11y agoCome on, a coat of paint vs re-designing your motherboard and re-doing chassis molds... it's a different ballpark. It's like meeting a beggar asking you for spare change and one asking to come live with you; "caving" to the former doesn't really cost you anything.
