I think this issue/misunderstanding roots in the somewhat loose interpretation of the word startup. A lot of my friends claim to have one, when all they really have is a business idea and maybe a couple of lines of code. Does that mean they are a real startup? By its definition, sure, but in reality what they have is more of a playground than a real business.
