I've posted before about my theories regarding optimum commenting and moderation systems, but one thing I've recently been thinking about is some sort of logic/rationality analysis engine (perhaps through nlp/ml?).
What I really want is to wade through the extra verbal fluff of a comment and get to its real points, so that I can determine if they are rational and logical. My primary method is by looking for fallacies which are tell-tell signs of a bad argument.
That still doesnt "fix" moderation, but I think such a system could be used to get rid of consistently illogical trolls to reduce the moderator workload at least.
Ideally, I imagine exclusivity of posting to be barrier 1, and moderation to be barrier 2. Some strange combinantion of hn Rules and /. Randomized moderation along with /. Tagging styles, would probably be the best.
Another factor to consider is that sockpuppetry has thrown the democratic balance of such systems off, and Im not yet sure how to deal with that.
