I entirely concur with both your points, especially about how little appreciated this subject has been. I was dimly aware of it, I mean it's no secret there's a lot of really terrible stuff on the web, and it's shocked me when I've stumbled into it. It's disquieting to realize I never thought about what it takes to keep a site like YouTube from being a complete cesspool. Never crossed my mind, but the question should've occurred to me, why didn't it? I wish I had an answer.
Of course, now I know how good a job moderators have been doing, and better understanding of the toll that role can take. They deserve a lot of respect. The idea this is a subject worthy of systematic study sticks with me though not yet clear about the next steps. Any case, the implications of the story cover a large space in economics, politics, ethics, law, and medicine. It will be fascinating to see how it develops.
