I've worked at a few big corporations where you'd get special plaques or pins for years of service, good ideas, attending certain training courses, and so on, and although I personally didn't understand the appeal -- I'd rather have challenging and meaningful work -- the people who earned those awards seemed to display them proudly. I always wondered why that kind of "rep grinding" wasn't more prevalent than the usual winner-take-all "employee of the month" stuff.
