I don't think people are arguing against GC being good. It's just that Objective-C did not have GC until very recently and that's they way it is. Having used lots of languages and frameworks I think that Cocoa/UIKit is very elegant despite the manual memory management. It might even be true that most of the big Cocoa applications will continue to use manual memory management.
