PSA: "Tor", not "TOR".
https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#WhyCalledTor https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#WhyCalledTor
"Note: even though it originally came from an acronym, Tor is not spelled “TOR”. Only the first letter is capitalized. In fact, we can usually spot people who haven't read any of our website (and have instead learned everything they know about Tor from news articles) by the fact that they spell it wrong."
- Arzh 11y agoPeople still do that crap with Go (Golang) for no damn reason, it'll never stop because even if they have read that they don't care.
- blowski 11y agoPrecisely. I say 'Go' because people think Golang is something else. There is only one thing worse than people talking about your product with the wrong name, and that's nobody talking about your product.
- tomjakubowski 11y agoRead what? Isn't it just a way to disambiguate the language from the game or the verb?
- Arzh 11y agoContext will do that for you in 99% of the cases, the other 1% is people who are confused for about 15 seconds.
- TheDong 11y agoFor me, the larger issue is searching! E.g., compare the search results for "Go sequel" and "golang sequel". Golang is far more searchable than the ultra-vague "go". Even if humans can figure out the context, a search engine indexing it cannot.
- Arzh 11y agoI would beg to differ, maybe because I have never heard of someone searching 'sequel' instead of 'sql' but I have never had a problem with google or bing or duck duck go giving me what I was looking for by just using 'go'
- Houshalter 11y agoLiterally the comment just above you had to specify they meant "Golang" in parentheses. It's a very poor choice of name. I remember when the AlphaGo thing came out on HN and there were some people who clicked because they thought it was about the language.
- Arzh 11y agoYeah that's my comment, I was driving my point home that Golang is dumb.
- orthecreedence 11y agoAnd LISP =]
- qbrass 11y ago* (or 'Lisp 'LISP) LISP
- logfromblammo 11y agoCouldn't it also be "LisP", as the abbreviation for "List Processing"?
- qbrass 11y ago* (or 'Lisp 'LisP) LISP
- gambiting 11y agoI usually say "TOR" because "Tor" means "track" my language so people can get confused and writing it in all capitals makes it clearer.
- 746F7475 11y agoThat note seems so childish. "We rebranded and if you don't know about it you are just uneducated mongrel on the mercy of media"
- bcook 11y agoIf someone speaks as an authority about Tor but never even visited the official site to read the FAQ, they deserve some criticism...
- 746F7475 11y agoTo me "tOr" will always mean "The Onion Router" because that's what it is. No matter how the "toR" people want me to spell their programs name
