Are you talking about the same Howard Marks?
- tim333 11y agoI was thinking that. All he did was import a good deal of cannabis which is now becoming legal in many places. I'm not sure he was involved in any violence. He did seem rather wrecked when I saw him talk which was probably not a great ad for smoking loads.
- tablewatcher 11y agoHe had involvement with the IRA to smuggle drugs through Ireland, they used the money to buy guns to kill loyalists.
- dabeeeenster 11y agoSounds more like the CIA
- alex_hitchins 11y agoWorking with the IRA was enough for me to dislike the man. People seem to forget the IRA used to blow people up quite a bit.
- tim333 11y agoI googled the IRA involvement at it looks like he didn't work with them directly but he worked with another smuggler, James McCann who did smuggle arms to the IRA.
- oneeyedpigeon 11y agoMost governments around the world have "blown people up quite a bit". Is anyone who works with any government now immoral?
- alex_hitchins 11y agoThe IRA aren't/weren't in government. The IRA are terrorists.
- oneeyedpigeon 11y agoI wasn't suggesting otherwise. I'm simply saying that, if nobody did any work with any 'organisation' that has blown people up, a lot fewer people would be in work right now.
- zo1 11y agoSociety can be quite fickle and forgetful sometimes when it comes to that sort of thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umkhonto_we_Sizwe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umkhonto_we_Sizwe
