Without welfare, the mother would likely give he children up for adoption by responsible people that can afford them. At least she would have that choice, and the choice to raise the children in poverty, thus causing them to suffer, would still be hers.
- tamana 11y agoPeople are lining up around the block to adopt poor non-white babies? Mothers have no natural human emotions of attachment to their offspring?
- awt 11y agoThey aren't? If you can find the stats for non-white newborns I'd read them. What kind of empathy does a mother have for her child that would raise him without a father in poverty? What empathy does a single mother have for the people from whom she is taking money in the form of welfare?
- dang 11y agoI don't think it's single mothers who lack empathy here. If you have something thoughtful to say about a difficult topic, that's fine, but please don't post ideological rhetoric to HN threads.

- dang 11y agoIt's not the topic that's the problem, it's the pre-existing political boilerplate. That stuff doesn't add to conversation, it destroys it.
- awt 11y agoJudging by the responses to my "boilerplate," inluding yours which consisted of a run of the mill ad hominem attempt to shut down the conversation by white knighting, and others which were non-arguments and sarcastic these are not arguments that people have considered.

- awt 11y agoIf you do not hold them responsible for choosing bad men, then YOU rob them of their agency. To put it another way, you treat them like children.
