The real victory for privacy here is that a tool used by the masses has given then end to end encryption, and that alone is a game changer:
- This enables network effects for private communication, i.e. it's harder for privacy to be breached by an insecure partner
- One can avoid being singled out for using an obscure tool to hide their communication
Sure, it doesnt fit all the marks EFF would desire, but it's undeniably a very positive achievement for privacy.
The only thing missing is a canary to signal some sort of back door, since it's not open source. Then again, diverting users away from their app is not in their interests.
