Your anecdote reminds me of the Danish National Soccer Team winning the European Soccer Contest in 1992. The team didn't qualify for the tournament. All players had started summer vacation, when another team became disqualified or something. The Danish team was called to stand in on a very short notice. No time for any training etc., just merrily playing soccer. And ending up winning the entire contest.
