  That's the one reason I disagree with. If people aren't looking at your old stuff it's because they have to put more effort into finding it. If he offered it for a limited time he'd get a lot more views, but how much of that is just because of the link in the article that now shows up on the front page? Moving to non-free may give you a temporary boost; organizing the archives would structurally improve page views on old content.
