More than a few Lenovo (was Google, was Motorola) Mobility devices require Lenovo to maintain servers in order for some of the carrier apps, their apps and other phone features to work. Sidekick (Microsoft, was Danger) also has an enormously creaky, brittle server infrastructure that no one enjoys supporting but it's needed for devices also. Know the risks when purchasing from a startup, and more so with dependencies on other peoples' servers for a product to function, because it can easily become SaaS-like (HWaaS?), as in this case.
