It does seem like spam to me. I don't see a conceptual difference with the Viagra emails i frequently receive.
- thibaut_barrere 17y agoIt's a paid content that is useful to some here (hence the upvotes). Do you mean paid content or services shouldn't be posted here ?
- jerome_etienne 17y agoyep, and viagra is usefull to some people with emails... your argument is not convincing. This is cheap dialectic. oh and additionnaly viagra is usefull to some people reading HN... do you mean it is ok to advertuze viagra in HN ? (i can do cheap dialectic too :) more seriously, this 'news' is clearly a spam and lets please avoid spam on HN.
- davidw 17y agoIf you stop and think about it for a minute, Rails is fairly topical for this site, whereas e.d. is not. I think there is nothing wrong with trying to sell something that you've worked hard on; isn't that what most of us are doing here? That said, I didn't vote this up and don't think I would buy this book.
- jerome_etienne 17y agowell i dunno for you but i see very few 'news' which are direct links on the products sold by the posters. So no, i dont think this is what most of us are doing here. i wont talk on this thread again. no hard feeling here, just trying to avoid more spamming in the future. have fun
- thibaut_barrere 17y ago> your argument is not convincing. This is cheap dialectic. There was no argument or dialectic: I was just giving my opinion and asking a question (ie not trying to convince you), because I was curious to know why you had this other opinion.
- billturner 17y agoFor one thing, the author of the ebook is a frequent poster here, which should give it a little more weight than a viagra email. Plus, there have been plenty of links about the transition to Rails 3, and this looks like it could be a handy ebook, especially if it goes more in depth than the release notes and basic migration guide.
- jfarmer 17y agoThe reflexive anti-commercialism one sees in this community really surprises me sometimes. Startups are nothing if not commercial enterprises! Do you really think HN would vote up a viagra spam blog?
- detst 17y agoHow is this any different than a member posting their startup (that charges money)? He created something of interest to the community and charges for it. I love free content but I still think it's great that he created something of value and is asking for money. What's wrong with that? The only thing better would be if he followed up with a post about how it went and what he learned.
