It's easy to knock on the poor for making bad choices with their resources. But what the well-off percieve as "frivolous" or "irresponsible" may very well be the most cost-effective way to maintain sanity when undergoing stress that is not unlike what founders experience when struggling to keep a company afloat.
- knodi123 11y agoLet's not portray alcoholics as reasonable people making the best mental-health decisions available to them.
- ThomPete 11y agoLets not assume that the definition of an alcoholic is well defined. To most americans, Danes would be considered raging alcoholics , yet nothing make them less rational than their american counterparts.
- knodi123 11y agoFine, but we were discussing someone talking about how it's rational to blow your UBI on alcohol in order to deal with the stress of running a business. Drinking your entire basic income away is not a rational decision, no matter how stressed you are.
- fucking_tragedy 11y agoHow much money and red tape do you propose we print and roll out to ensure welfare recipients only drink an acceptable amount of alcohol?
- knodi123 11y agonone. I'm not sure what you think I said, but I suggest you re-read my comment and notice how narrow my point was.
- aninhumer 11y agoWell part of the point is that they won't be quite so stressed because their needs are met. But more importantly, what exactly is the alternative? Do you think alcoholics are going to magically get better when we take their money away? They need treatment.
- knodi123 11y ago> They need treatment. No shit. I think maybe you imagined I was saying something that I was not. My comment was very specific and narrow. Drinking away your money is not a rational decision, period, full stop, end of point. If you think that's a pretty obvious point, then I agree, too. I felt it was the appropriate response to the comment I was responding to.
- aninhumer 11y agoOkay, I guess I just inferred more from context. Nonetheless, I don't think the post you originally replied to was suggesting that spending your entire income on booze is rational, just some of it.
