Code tests are:
1. Intrinsically unbiased.
2. Applicable for remote candidates.
3. Easily verifiable (unlike a github repo)
I'd take code tests over alternative interviewing methods any day.
- garysieling 11y agoGenerally I agree, but on verification tests can make someone initially appear stronger than they are. E.g. if they find a stackoverflow post that matches the question. There is also at least one "learn to code" bootcamp with a database of tests on github.
- CalRobert 11y ago"if they find a stackoverflow post that matches the question." To be fair, "figure out if someone else has solved this already on stackoverflow" isn't the worst approach to solving (some) problems. I just did a coding test where the exercise was trivial, and indeed there are lots of good answers on stackoverflow. I am guessing the reason I have another interview coming, though, is that I made it easy to read, explained my logic in comments, and wrote thorough unit tests checking edge cases.
- garysieling 11y agoAgreed. I've seen people document forum posts they sourced as well, which I appreciate.
