I think the most remarkable bit here is that the way we feel about how we look our is the strongest predictor of happiness and self esteem. I think money vs happiness is less interesting (and we've covered it on HN weekly) than pretty vs happiness. My 2c: duh. If you draw confidence and security just from looking at yourself, you have an advantage.
